Trump Announces Attorney General Nomination

Last Friday, President Trump confirmed William Barr as his pick for attorney general, a
replacement for Jeff Sessions. William Barr previously served as the Attorney General
during the first Bush Administration. He has also taken several leadership positions in
the Justice Department. Due to Barr’s comments on events such as the Russia investigation
and Trump in general, Senate Democrats are apprehensive of his nomination. Based on
Barr’s previous experience, I believe that he is qualified for the job. However, he will face
opposition in the Senate due to his political views. I am unsure about how this will affect the
United State’s international relations.

Questions:
  1. Do you believe that William Barr will become the Attorney General? What opposition will he face?
  2. If Barr is confirmed, how do you think the Department of Justice will change in terms of what
issues they focus on and what stance will it they take?

  1. I believe that Barr will become the Attorney General because the majority of the Senate is still Republican as they still have 53 seats. Thus, I believe that Barr will be confirmed due to the Senate’s bias towards his wishes. However, he will receive some criticism and questioning going into the position due to his previous comments about the Russia Investigation. Moreover, I believe that he may face some backlash from the public as they may not see him fit for the job due to his previous Russia comments. If he is confirmed by the Senate, I think that the Dept. of justice will change to gear more of their focus on issues like immigration. Their position will thus be extremist and increase regulation against immigrants even more. Ultimately, I think that this could strain relations with foreign countries and possibly lead to appeals on immigration acts.

  2. I agree with Noah that Barr will likely become the Attorney General because the Republicans have the majority in the Senate. Although he is certainly qualified, I am sceptical of whether he will direct the Department of Justice with unbiased intent. As more is revealed about the Trump administration, the President seems to want to surround himself with people loyal to him and his political objectives, rather than people with experience and a solid reputation respected by people across party lines. Barr seems more interested in investigating Hillary Clinton than the Mueller investigation into possible collusion between President Trump and Russia, making him a safe ally for President Trump. I am interested to see how this plays out, and hope that if Barr does become the Attorney General, he will not use his position to enable President Trump to act with unchecked power.

  3. Even though he seems to share similar ideology with Trump, I believe Barr's experience will allow him to make appropriate decisions on certain issues compared to acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker, who has seemingly just complied with whatever Trump wants. Also, having served through multiple different eras, Barr possesses unique and more complete perspectives on certain things, which is another positive.

  4. As previously stated, I agree that Barr will become the next attorney general due to his previous experience in the Bush administration and the majority of the Senate is Republican. We have seen his previous statements supporting Donald Trump, which is most likely why he got the nomination. As Mayuko stated, Barr is more interested in investigating Hillary Clinton rather than Russia which makes him an obvious candidate for Trump. The only question will be his bias if he in fact becomes the next attorney general.

  5. Well, I can't say for certain whether or not William Barr will become the Attorney General. But, certainly, he will receive much opposition (especially from Democrats). It seems that recently there is much opposition against almost anything Trump does. The opposition against Brett Kavanaugh exemplifies this. Although I am not clear on what Barr's comments on events such as the Russia investigation are, the apprehension of Senate Democrats is foreboding of opposition to William Barr that is sure to come.
