Trump's National Address Escalates Border Wall Fight

Last night, President Trump gave a speech urging Americans to support his proposition to spend 5.7 billion dollars on constructing a border wall. This comes in the wake of a government shutdown that has already been going on for 2 weeks. The shutdown is largely caused by a disagreement between Republicans and House Democrats over spending for the wall. Republicans want the spending to be allocated in the new budget resolution that would end the shutdown, while Democrats want to negotiate after ending the shutdown.

This speech to the nation was followed by a refutation by leading Democrats, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The speech raises many questions regarding this issue.
Should the government shut down over this issue of funding?
Should the government try to end the shutdown before engaging in negotiations?
Should we fund the wall?
Is the situation at the border as much of an emergency as the president claims? What is the best way to solve it?
Would the president be able to declare a national emergency, as he has threatened to do, in order to order the wall to be built without congressional approval? Should he?

  1. I believe that Congress needs to resolve its own shutdown as thousands or even millions of federal employees have been without pay. The indecision to pass a budget to build a border wall needs to be resolved immediately. Democrats and Republicans should pass a budget first before dealing with the deal because the funding affects real people's lives. The government should try to end the shutdown to avoid even more lawsuits from such workers as well as protests. The situation at the border is a humanitarian crisis that needs both our and Mexico's help. Trump must pass the budget bill before issuing any rhetoric regarding the wall.

  2. I think I agree with many other people in the Democratic party that we should not spend $5.7 billion dollars to build a border wall. In the past week, I have seen many news posts about the issue of the budgeting for the wall, and there are so many other options when it comes to where to spend that kind of money. Some say we can guarantee Pre-K education for almost everyone with that money or pay for the rent of thousands of American citizens for several months. Additionally, I believe that the shutdown of the government is not only very unfair and not well thought out because of the impact it has on hundreds of families and they income they receive. Instead of this shutdown, we should be having discussions and debates to aid the issue versus this sort of ineffective stalling.

  3. I don't believe the President should be able to declare national emergency over this issue of illegal immigration. A majority of the people at the Southern border are refugees seeking asylum in the United States, which is legal and should be granted due to their horrible conditions in their home countries. A national emergency is usually called due to a natural disaster, outbreak of disease, military action, etc, and illegal immigration has always been an issue for the United States- yet it's never been a national emergency. The President shouldn't declare this a national emergency because it isn't- he simply wishes to do as he pleases without the approval of Congress. I find it embarrassing and disappointing that our government has to shut down over this issue, because it means that political gridlock is at an all time high and compromise is at an all time low. Our country is built on compromise and creating diverse and well thought out solutions to problems such as these, and building a wall after shutting down the government for weeks on end is no compromise for anyone.

  4. I do not believe that the government should use $5.7 billion to build a border wall. The government shutdown has shown how controversial Trump's plan is, meaning that neither party can walk away from this satisfied. I think that the President's idea to declare a National Emergency is completely selfish, since he is only trying to pursue his own agenda and go over Congress's head to get his way. Additionally, there are many other ways this money could be used to help better the American society. When Americans ask for free Pre-K educations, the government often responds by calling such a proposal unrealistic and even impossible. However, it is evident that Trump is willing to spend such a great amount of money to work towards only his own, selfish needs without thinking of the backlash and disagreement of so many Americans, as well as members of Congress. Although addressing U.S. immigration policy may be important, simply building a wall to avoid such problems is unrealistic. Fact is that most illegal immigrants do not enter the country by hopping the border, but rather by overstaying their VISAs. I believe that Trump is acting in a very irrational and self-centered manner in which he is trying to demonstrate his dominance and further only his own agenda.

  5. The government should not have shut down with this issue because this shut down has done more harm then good. For example, with this shutdown many TSA employees have not getting paid for the past few weeks, so they are quitting. Without the TSA there becomes a security risk. This shut down needs to come to an end before negotiations because it is clear that the government employees are not getting their needs met. We should not fund the wall, and spend $5.7 billion of dollars on something that is ineffective. With the situation at the border, the President should not be able to call a national emergency because there is not immediate threat that is going to harm or distribute many people. The money that is trying to spent on the wall should go to other causes, that are more realistic like, education, water resources, and paying wages for government employees.
