The Democrat lead House of Representatives has voted to reject Trump's declaration of a National Emergency. This markets the first time that congress has attempted to terminate a national emergency from the president. the vote will lead to a standoff between Democratic leaders in the house and President Trump. The White House has issued a formal veto threat if this bill passes the GOP controlled Senate. According to Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell expects the bill to come up for a vote in the Senate in mid March. When it comes up for a vote there is a Chance it passes the Senate as 3 Republicans saying they would support the bill, only one less than needed to get the bill passed. if the bill passes the Senate it would likely be vetoed by Trump and go back to the Senate for another vote.

  1. Considering Trump's decision to even declare a National Emergency in the first place, I definitely think that he would veto the Senate's decision not to support the bill. Since a super-majority would then be required to overturn the President's veto, it is crucial that members of Congress look past party lines in order to stop the President. However, I do not think that this is a very likely scenario, since there are only very few Republicans in Congress who would defy the President during a time of high political turmoil and conflict. The current reality is that the issue once again comes down to party differences, and that overturning the President's veto is only a matter of whether members of Congress are capable of abandoning their political stances in order to do what is right.

  2. Unfortunately, I don't think this bill will pass in the Senate. We have come to a point where politicians will align so strongly with their party that they lose sight of what's really best for the average American. It is unlikely that enough republicans will decide to go against their party leader in order to sway the vote in favor of the democrats. Either way, Trump will definitely veto the bill when it comes to his desk, since he declared the emergency in the first place and has already issued a warning to use his veto. Now that the House is controlled by democrats, I don't expect this to be the last of these types of occurrences. Since Congress is split, getting anything passed is going to simply become increasingly difficult, if not nearly impossible.

  3. I don't think it will pass the senate, mainly because letting it pass would call into question what exactly a national emergency is. If any president can declare a national emergency to fund things they want to fund, then future (democrat) presidents could use it to fund things like environmental protection and other reforms, which many of the trump supporters in the senate would not approve of.

  4. The bill will mot likely not pass in the Senate due to the political polarization and party loyalty. If the bill passed, Trump would simply veto it and it would be extremely difficult to override his veto. Futhermore, if the bill passed, it would come to dicussion on how we can avoid this scenario in the future and limit the president's power to declare national emergencies.

  5. I don't think this bill will pass because right now I think America has very polarized viewpoints and a lot of party loyalty. Moreover, If a bill was passed by both the senate and the house I think Trump would use his veto power and after that I think it would be very hard to get the bill passed with a 2/3 vote. Most likely it will not pass and I think we could use that money into something for efficient and effective for the country.
