Kim Jong-un to meet with Vladimir Putin

Kim Jong-un to meet with Vladimir Putin

North Korean and Russian leaders Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin
are scheduled to meet on April 25th for the Vladivostok summit.
Russia aims to regulate nuclear weapon usage near the North Korean
Peninsula while North Korea intends to seek support. This meeting was
scheduled soon after discussions with the United States earlier this year
failed to reach a conclusion surrounding North Korea's nuclear weapons
program. North Korea and Russia had maintained relations as allies
during the Cold War. However, Russia, along with the United States and
China, is uncomfortable with North Korea becoming a nuclear state.

Questions:

1. What are your expectations for this meeting?

2. How will this meeting effect how the United States will approach the
next summit with North Korea?

3. What will countries surrounding North Korea, such as China and South
Korea expect from this meeting, and how will they interact with North Korea depending on the outcome?

  1. Depending on whether or not this meeting is successful in regulating North Korean nuclear programs or not, the United States can look towards this meeting to develop ideas on how to approach their next summit with North Korea. Countries around North Korea, I would believe, certainly want the North Korean nuclear weapon development to be curbed, as having yet another nuclear country as a neighbor would be a possible threat to national security for these bordering countries. They would most likely hope for the meeting to be successful in regulating North Korea's nuclear weapon programs. However, if this summit fails, I can foresee other neighboring countries such as China holding meetings with North Korea as well for the same purpose as the summits that Russia and the US held with North Korea.

  2. President Trump has made efforts to strengthen the relations between the United States and Russia, therefore it is likely that Putin holds a similar view of North Korea as Trump does. If the meeting turns out to be a success then it is also probable that Trump will be looking to echo and discuss some of the points brought up at the Vladivostok summit which may potentially result in a compromise. China has historically been one of North Korea's most prominent and influential allies but China along with South Korea are definitely hesitant to see North Korea become a nuclear state. For this reason, China and South Korea will be hoping that the summit keeps North Korea at peace with the rest of the world.

  3. To answer the first question, I think that the meeting will not have a positive outcome for either sides. I think that the United States will intervene once they feel that the relationship between Russia and North Korea will continue to deal with nuclear weapons. Trump would probably try to create tension between Russia and North Korea. I think from this meeting, South Korea will be on more alert about the nuclear weapons being near their territory, and will try to work with the United States more. I think South Korea is most likely going to seek help from the U.S.

  4. I don't have any hopes for the talks because North Korea is known for being very unwilling to move in ways of regulating their own nuclear supply. However, I think that Russia participating the discussions may aid in this process because they are allies where past negotiators (the US) were not. Despite this, I really do hope some agreement can be stuck between the nations because it is in everyone's best interest to stop nuclear proliferation.

  5. I believe that Russia and NK may reach some sort of deal as Putin has been trying to expand Russia and trying to expand its power. With the current lack of allies, Putin may become friendlier and aid NK with some sort of loose deal about NK's nuclear program. I believe that if a deal is struck between Russia and NK, the US either will become more aggressive in an effort to force NK into a deal or try to plead with NK in order to keep them from becoming a close Russian ally. I believe that China and SK are both hoping that a deal is made between the two countries as Russia has been close with NK before, which may help them to close on some deal unlike the US.

  6. I believe this meeting wont bring very much because North Korea is very reluctant to regulate their own nuclear supply. However, I do believe it is a positive that North Korea is willing to meet with other countries. I believe the US will use this meeting to find new ways to approach their next summit with North Korea.

  7. Even through the meeting, little will change unless the foreign nations along with America lift their sanctions. At the same time, Putin will attempt to persuade Kim Jong Un to follow and answer the international guidelines properly. Since both nations are communist, it is very hard that Putin will force Kim Jong Un into an unfavorable position and Kim will also not choose to start something with Russia

  8. To begin, I expect that this meeting will lead to North Korea walking away empty handed. I believe that they will not achieve what they want in a nuclear agreement and turn to another big country for support. At the same time, North Korea is running out of big name support powers which may lead them to agree with Russia and forget becoming a nuclear state, at least for now. Moreover, I believe that if the outcome is that North Korea will leave empty handed, the US will take actions like making other alliances with big powers to prevent them from supporting North Korea and the nuclear state. If alone at their next summit, I believe that the US will provide troops if probable cause is stated but nuclear support will never be the result. I think that China and South Korea will expect Russia to support North Korea simply due to their long term relations proven by the Cold War. Therefore, I believe that they will ignore Russia and North Korea until support is removed because this support for a nuclear state places them at the most risk for danger.

  9. I don't believe that much will change from the meeting because North Korea typically seems to hesitate lifting sanctions. I think that the meeting could influence US to meet again with North Korea in the future. China and South Korea are most likely hoping for positive outcomes from these meetings so that the threat between them and North Korea is lessened.

  10. I believe that little will change to bring foreign relations with the two countries. Even as there have been meetings between the leaders of the two countries, they still have not been able to achieve what they want in a nuclear agreement. While the support powers of many large counties have been named, it seems as if it well have little effect to develop change from the meeting.

  11. I think that little will change or come out of this meeting. I think that the meeting could influence the United States to meet one more with North Korea, but North Korea seems very reluctant to compromise over anything. South Korea and other neighboring countries to North Korea will most likely get in touch with the US more due to the fact that North Korea is becoming an nuclear state.
