The first picture of a black hole opens a new era of astrophysics

supermassive black hole at M87

Black holes are known for being very hard to find because of how nothing, even light, can escape it. Despite this,  scientists have managed to capture the very fist picture of a black hole that is more than 50 million light years away. The reasoning for being able to capture the image of this black hole is due to a system of telescopes and the black hole gravitating gas from space around it. The findings of this black hole are huge as it confirms Einstein's theory of General Relativity. With the confirmation of theories such as that, it also forms new theories and research surrounding physics and quantum physics. Astrophysics and other space sciences are arguably important, but the government has been debating the funding of programs and research since the Obama administration.

Questions:
1.  Do you agree with the past and current administration that funding should be cut for programs such as NASA?
2. Federal funding spent towards science programs is less than 1%, do you think that there should be more funding for science programs?
3. Do you think that this finding could be potential for programs such as NASA to receive more federal funding?

  1. Of all the government programs that should be cut, NASA is on the bottom of the list. The research has massive potential for gains in energy and knowledge that would serve not only the country, but the entire world. For that same reason, science programs of similar importance should receive proper funding. Having made such a revolutionary discovery, I do think this is strong incentive for increased funding. With the prospect of important discoveries and massive progress, greater funding would not be an ill advised move.

  2. I believe that NASA's part of the budget shouldn't be cut because their department is bigger than just a space program - it also helps promote the technology and science subjects with kids and others that got the US ahead of the world in technology. Although I would agree that the government has better things to do than spend more on science programs, it does have potential to get our nation even further ahead. I believe that photographing a black hole is progress, I don't think it will be a reason why NASA's budget will expand.

  3. I do not believe the funding for NASA should be cut by by the government. With the environment path we're currently heading down, I believe we need all the extra knowledge about other possibilities and space in general we can get. I do think that this finding should give NASA and its programs a boost in funding, because it's an extremely historic discovery and deserves to be credited and pursued as far as possible. There are many parts of the U.S. that the government funds, and I think they should look at cutting some other sections and adding to NASA's funding after this discovery and progress.

  4. I do not agree with the past and current administration that funding should be cut for programs such as NASA as its role is not simply exploring space but promoting education and exploration in unknown areas. It provides knowledge that can be useful in fields other than purely space science. While I do believe that funding for science programs is important, I do not believe that should be the top priority for federal funding. However, if there is a chance, focusing more on educational programs is important as for example, it is an essential part for public education institutions to grow in prestige in abilities. Moreover, science in general is becoming an important aspect in all trades, so ensuring that everyone is able to get at the very least a quality basic understanding is important. This finding could be potential for programs such as NASA to receive more funding as it really highlights how far we have come in space discovery and STEM, as well as brightens the path for the future.

  5. There are definitely other places the government can cut down on the budget, but it shouldn't be NASA"s cut. I agree with the comment made above in that we know the current state of environment we are dealing with on the earth is already slowly going downhill and we need to make sure there are other options for us, and NASA will be able to help us figure out these options and possible solutions as well. If we can find the issue or find a solution to stop the current deteriorating environment, we will be able to have more possibilities on this planet.

  6. I believe that programs such as NASA should not have their funding cut, in fact, they should have them expanded. There will be a point in the future where we will colonize other planets, no matter how distant in the future it may be. Funding will help accelerate research and development. I believe there should be more funding for science programs because they are the types of programs that help us advance as a civilization. I believe that they may gain more funding from findings such as this because the government may be inclined to learn more about the discovery.
