Trump and Kim Jong Un Meet Again

President Trump shakes hands with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un during Wednesday’s meeting in Hanoi.

Trump began his summit in Hanoi, Vietnam with Kim Jong Un quite unconventionally. Both he and Kim enjoyed a one-on-one discussion prior to eating dinner together Wednesday evening. This meeting will test the two leaders abilities to get some real progress in limiting North Korea's nuclear programs. Although the two met last year in Singapore, there was very little tangible progress despite their cordial behavior. During their meeting, Trump expressed his admiration for the North Korean dictator. He also explained that he hopes to help North Korea grow economically in exchange for surrendering their atomic weapons program. Kim Jong Un also hopes that he and Trump will be more successful with their negotiations this time. Their summit is happening in the midst of Michael Cohen's testimonies in Washington which could cast a shadow over any of Trump's progress with North Korea. The current investigation puts pressure on Trump to come out of Hanoi with a substantial agreement. North Korea has indicated that they would like major sanctions relief in return for closing their nuclear program. The question is how flexible the U.S. is willing to be in negotiations. I would argue that preventing North Korea from developing an ICBM is crucial to our country's security.

Do you think that Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will reach a compromise?

How important is reaching an agreement at this summit?

Who do you think will pay the bigger price if an agreement is met? The U.S. or North Korea?

  1. Yes. Though it may not be the most substantive document, perhaps not even adhered to by either signee, there will be at least something to come out of this summit. If KJU is really looking to make one, now would be the time. A future US president may not dedicate as much time or humility to the problem of north korea in the future. For Kim, reaching a compromise at this summit is important for economic growth of north korea, which I think would be a key part of him keeping power if he so desires. It is also important for Trump as he is in need of an image boost at the moment. I think the US will pay a larger price because it is more critical for Trump that a deal be met, and KJU will likely leverage that. North Korea also has very little to lose, so it's unlikely any outcome would be disadvantageous for them.

  2. I do not think that Trump and Kim Jong Un will reach an agreement. Kim Jong Un doesn't have much incentive to give away anything in a negotiation, and uses these meetings to gain international standing and other aid. North Korea has generally not kept their agreements with the U.S. for the past 40 years. North Korea has only kept their agreement to reduce missile launches.

  3. I believe that the timeline matches the time of this summit. However, Trump and Kim Jong Un need to provide more concrete agreements instead of the vague one they both compromised to last year. I think they will reach an agreement, but it will need to be more concrete in order to hold more importance in the international community and the relations between the US and North Korea. It is very important to reach such a deal because the Koreas have technically been at war since the start of the Korean war and not finding a solution to the problem will only complicate further issues. I believe both sides will pay equally a big price as both sides must give up a substantial part of their military in order to receive what they want.

  4. Both of these leaders are very strong-minded which would make coming to a compromise a significant challenge. Trump will need to be willing to give up something like the sanctions on North Korea in order for Kim Jong Un to agree to end his nuclear program. I think it's incredibly important for them to come out of the summit with some sort of agreement in order to ensure our own national security. The US would definitely have a much more significant benefit because it would protect our nation, and KJU certainly is aware of this fact. Thus, North Korea can use that to get the compromises that they want and get the most out of this agreement, leveraging our need to end his nuclear program.

  5. I do not think they will reach a compromise. I think that both leaders have not changed much from their last meeting so there is not much that will change about how they will reach an agreement if any. I think that the importance of reaching an agreement is more important than ever however which is why I am very nervous to see how this summit will turn out. I think that Trump and Kim Jong Un are both fairly stubborn and close minded leaders, so I don’t have very high expectations for their compromise or a good deal coming out of the summit. I think that the ideas and openness to compromise is the most important factor, but both have things they are not willing to give up. I hope that the summit doesn’t end with any kind of appeasement from Trump, or any vague promises from Kim Jong Un like last time.

  6. They will not reach a compromise as both leaders want different agendas. Kim will not fully denuclearize without a clear sanction lifted from North Korea. North Korea will only allow such a thing to happen if all the sanctions are lifted. They are afraid that the United States would go back on their words

  7. Both leaders are very unwilling to compromise, especially when they start out on complete opposite sides. I don't think nuclear testing is as huge of a threat as people make it out to be. We aren't nearing war at the moment, and we will know when it's coming. Kim Jung Un just wants to feel protected and pose himself as a threat to other countries, more for ego and defense of his country. I do not think he will cause too much harm with the weapons. Nevertheless, I still think an agreement between the two leaders is preferable, but most likely not realistic considering their meetings. In order to reach a compromise, both sides would need to give up a lot, which is very improbable. Most likely North Korea would have to pay a bigger price is an agreement is reached, but as stated before, this is extremely unlikely. I think some third party needs to come into the discussion because these continuously failed attempts are going nowhere.

  8. I think that they will be unable to make a compromise because they are both very strong headed and stubborn. Moreover, I think both of them have a trend of deception and they are both aware of that, so while there is a front of being very kind and friendly to each other, I believe there is some known tension between them. They do have different agendas and that is another reason I don't think they will be able to make a compromise, but just meeting and seem to be friendly and in good relations with them helps both of their images. Like most of us, I can understand why they and the rest of the country would be weary to make a deal.

  9. I don't think they will be able to compromise. Both leaders want entirely different things and are too stubborn to give up what they want. I believe it is important for the two leaders to come to some sort of compromise for our national safety. I think in order for a compromise to be made, the US will have to give up more incentives for Kim Jong Un.
