Trump's re-election team turns its focus back to Joe Biden

Article

For most of 2019, Trump has launched many efforts to bring down his potential
general election opponent Joe Biden. In an attempt to pursue a scandal that could
destroy his political rival, Trump landed himself in a heap of trouble that resulted
in his impeachment. It has been seen that in the past few weeks that the Trump
team’s focus has shifted from Biden to Bernie Sanders, as Sanders has been racking
up victories while Biden’s support seemed to be dimming. However, Biden had an
impressive campaign revival, as seen from the results of Super Tuesday. The Trump
team again shifted their focus back to Biden. The president’s main argument against
Biden revolves around his lack of mental sharpness and physical health. Trump’s
campaign is also reviving the allegations against Hunter Biden, committing to making it
a larger issue in the coming months. The focal point of Trump’s campaign is capitalizing
on the divide between progressive and moderate Democrats, hoping to draw a wedge
between Sander and Biden supporters.

1. How beneficial do you think bringing up the Hunter Biden scandal will be for Trump?
2. Do you believe there is validity in Trump’s argument that Biden is physically and mentally
incapable of performing the duties of presidency?
3. How do you think the divide between the progressive and moderate Democrats will affect the election?

  1. I do think there is some validity in the argument that Biden is mentally incapable of performing these duties because in many of the debates it seemed like Biden was struggling to find the words to express himself and was not very quick to think on his feet. However, I don’t think this argument means much coming from Trump, considering some actions he has taken that show that he too is mentally incapable of being the president. The divide between the progressive and moderate Democrats could hurt the Democrats because if the moderates think that the Democratic nominee is too progressive then they are likely to vote for Trump instead, unless they’re very loyal to their party.

  2. In all honesty, I support Trump in the argument that Biden's mental state is declining. In many of the debates and speeches that I've seen Biden take part in, I've noticed that he constantly mixes information or says weird things. On one occasion, he stated that he was "Joe Biden's Husband". On another occasion, he stated, "We chose truth over facts". Yes, it is normal for anyone to say nonsense from time to time, but the truth is, Biden is also not sharp at all, which is very important for a president. This is why, in my opinion, Sanders is the best option out of the two. Sanders has proven from time to time that he's able to stand up to anyone and dominate debates. Sanders has a bigger chance of defeating Trump than Biden does because he knows how to stand up to people like him.

  3. For the physical/mental ability attack, I personally think it's a cheap strategy. 1) Trump, Sanders, and Biden are all old and arguably all at risk physically. 2)Biden struggled with a speech disorder his entire life and to say he is incapable of being president because of that is just mean. Sure, he has his gaffes, sure he makes some mistakes while he's speaking, but from a political standpoint, his campaign can do so much better if they really wanted to hurt him. They can find other flaws, but pointing out this one is somewhat offensive. An ad hominem attack is a low blow in my opinon, but then again, that is Trump's style and it worked in 2016...

  4. I do believe that bringing up the Hunter Biden scandal will be beneficial for Trump in the general election. It is, at least to the base Trump will try to appeal to, similar to Hillary Clinton's email scandal, and that will absolutely be something that Biden has to deal with. I do think that there is some validity in the idea that Biden is mentally incapable of being president, as cheap as a tactic it may be, especially since I do not believe Trump is mentally fit either. But comparing Biden's talking now to when he was vice president, there is a noticeable difference, and cognitive decline almost. I don't think it can be blamed on a stutter when he himself says he has overcome that and he was not like this 10 years ago.

  5. Bringing up the Hunter Biden situation certainly could help Trump as he attempts to be reelected. There is some validity in the public questioning Biden's impaired speech and flawed reasoning at times. However, I have noticed Biden's overall speech and communications skills improve as the campaign has progressed, and that could signal him as more of a contender than people initially thought. I honestly believe Trump is in no position to judge the competence of Biden physically and mentally, because Trump himself is older and has made multiple outrageous decisions/comments that prove his incompetence. The divide within the democratic party is certainly real, but democrats may be willing to put those differences aside in order to prevent Trump from being reelected.
